PCIT
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy"Parent-Child Interaction Therapy" (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment method for children aged 2-6 and a half years old with behavioral problems. The PCIT therapist provides "real-time coaching" to parents wearing wireless headphones through a one-way mirror room and/or real-time video transmission to help parents establish a relationship with their child and learn appropriate discipline methods.
PCIT is divided into two stages. The first stage focuses on building an intimate relationship between parents and children. Parents will learn and master skills to help children calm down, improve attention, learn to cooperate, and enhance the enjoyable parent-child relationship.
The expected outcomes of PCIT stage 2 include:
- Reducing the frequency, severity, and/or duration of children's temper tantrums.
- Reducing the level of children's activity.
- Reducing negative attention-seeking behaviors in children (such as crying and commanding).
- Reducing parental frustration.
- Enhancing children's sense of security, safety, and attachment to parents.
- Increasing children's attention span.
- Enhancing children's self-esteem.
- Increasing children's prosocial behaviors (such as sharing and taking turns).
- Improving children's speaking skills and expressive abilities.
PCIT stage 2 helps parents to maintain confidence, calmness, and consistency in dealing with challenging behaviors of their children. In this stage, parents will learn discipline strategies to help children accept parental limitations, follow instructions, respect family rules, and behave appropriately in public places.
The expected outcomes of PCIT stage 2 include:
- Reducing the frequency, severity, and/or duration of children's aggressive behavior.
- Reducing the frequency of children's destructive behavior (such as intentionally breaking toys).
- Reducing children's resistance behavior.
- Increasing children's compliance with adult instructions
- Children showing more respect for family rules.
- Improving children's behavior in public places.
- Parents becoming calmer and more confident in discipline.
When parents have mastered both sets of PCIT skills and the child's behavior on the difficulty behavior rating scale is within the normal range, the treatment is considered complete. The actual number of treatment sessions depends on the parents' regular attendance and completion of each 5-minute special playtime. PCIT treatment can be completed in 12-20 sessions.
PCIT has been developed in Hong Kong for more than 10 years and has been scientifically proven effective in helping children improve behavior and emotional problems, as well as supporting parents in enhancing their discipline skills.
